TMA warns of possible cyclone formation in Indian Ocean

Dar es Salaam. The Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA) is monitoring a low-pressure system in the Indian Ocean near the Seychelles that is expected to develop into a cyclone within the next four days, potentially strengthening rainfall systems along Tanzania’s coastal areas from October 24, 2026.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, TMA said the system was located approximately 1,600 kilometres off the Tanzanian coast and was moving towards the coastal region.

The authority said the system could moderately strengthen the weather patterns responsible for rainfall along Tanzania’s coast and neighbouring areas, particularly from October 24.

However, TMA did not specify which areas would be affected or indicate the expected rainfall amounts in individual locations.

The development comes as the authority continues to monitor the system’s movement and its potential influence on weather conditions across the country.

TMA urged marine users and the public to continue following official weather forecasts and adhere to advice and guidance issued by meteorological experts and relevant authorities.

The authority said it would continue monitoring the low-pressure system and its possible effects on Tanzania’s weather patterns, pledging to provide further updates as necessary.
