TADB empowers Galaxy Foods to expand Kilimanjaro fresh across Tanzania

Arusha. The Tanzania Agricultural Development Bank (TADB) has empowered Galaxy Food and Beverages Ltd, popularly known for its Kilimanjaro Fresh brand, to overcome production barriers and expand its market reach.

The move is creating jobs and strengthening the dairy value chain in the country.

Galaxy’s Production Manager, Augustine Lyana, explained that before partnering with TADB, the company faced several challenges, including limited processing capacity, dependence on external dairy farmers for raw milk, and restricted distribution beyond Arusha.

“These challenges were slowing down the company’s growth,” he said.

With TADB’s support, Galaxy has established a modern farm with 240 dairy cows, installed a state-of-the-art UHT production line, and expanded its distribution from Arusha to Dar es Salaam, Dodoma, and Mwanza, with plans to enter the wider East African market.

“This partnership has brought major economic and social transformation,” Lyana added.

“We have created over 200 new jobs most of them for women and youth improved the quality and safety of our milk products, and strengthened the entire dairy value chain. Tanzania is now well-positioned to compete in the regional market at international standards.”

Tanzania’s dairy sector still holds vast potential. According to the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries, the country produces about 3 billion liters of milk annually, but only 12 percent is processed by industries.

Experts note that this low level of processing continues to hinder the country from fully harnessing its livestock resources and increasing value addition.

Currently, Galaxy produces fresh milk, fermented milk, yogurt, butter, and cheese. The company aims to leverage its new production capacity to access larger markets across East Africa.

Industry experts say Galaxy’s growth highlights how strategic investments can transform agribusiness and accelerate the development of local industries.
