Dodoma. As the world prepares to mark World Environment Day on June 5, 2025, the National Environment Management Council (NEMC) has urged Tanzanians to reduce plastic use, reuse materials, and recycle waste to support a circular economy.
Speaking during the ongoing exhibition for World Environment Day celebrations at Jakaya Kikwete Grounds in Dodoma, the Acting Central Zone Manager, Mr Novatus Mushi, said the Council is using the occasion to educate the public on the value of managing plastic waste and the economic opportunities it presents.
“This is part of our effort to promote the circular economy, which focuses on turning plastic waste into useful products. Every citizen has a role in reducing plastic pollution,” he said.

This year’s theme is “Mazingira Yetu na Tanzania Ijayo; Tuwajibike Sasa, Dhibiti Matumizi ya Plastiki” which means “Our Environment and the Tanzania We Want; Act Now, Control Plastic Use”.
The climax will be held on June 5, with the Guest of Honour expected to be the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan.
At the NEMC booth, officers are offering public education on proper waste management, the importance of environmental impact assessments for investors, and how to comply with environmental laws. They are also sharing knowledge on protecting biodiversity to support sustainable development.

Mr Mushi stressed that addressing plastic pollution is not just about protecting nature it’s also about unlocking new economic potential. Through awareness and action, NEMC hopes more people will see the value in recycling and take part in building a cleaner and more sustainable Tanzania.
