Zanzibar. Africa is moving to consolidate its climate priorities under a single, united position ahead of COP30 in Brazil, with a focus on finance, adaptation, and clean energy.
During a strategic meeting in Zanzibar, the African Group of Negotiators (AGN) resolved to update the African Common Position in line with the latest political and technical outcomes, including guidance from the Committee of African Heads of State and Government on Climate Change (CAHOSCC).
“The updated position must reflect Africa’s evolving priorities—climate finance, clean cooking, NDC 3.0, and just transition,” said one AGN delegate during the meeting.
The AGN emphasized the need to submit the position for ministerial endorsement at the African Ministerial Conference on the Environment (AMCEN) in July, ensuring political legitimacy and alignment with national interests.
This process aims to give Africa a stronger voice in upcoming negotiations and build internal consensus among the 54 member states. Delegates noted that Africa’s negotiating power depends on coherence between technical experts and political leaders.
The updated position will also serve as the basis for engagements with the UNFCCC Subsidiary Bodies (SB62) and global partners like the G20.
Tanzania, which currently chairs the AGN, received praise for its coordination efforts, with calls to maintain strong political support in the run-up to COP30.
The AGN reaffirmed that Africa must remain united to influence global climate outcomes and secure fair treatment in areas such as loss and damage, technology transfer, and adaptation finance
